Sigma Chi - Eta Lambda

Led by Mark Dattore’s (’13) inside-the-park homerun, our Eta Lambda chapter won the IFC Softball Tournament on Sunday, beating Pi Kappa Alpha in the championship game by a score of 10-9. More importantly, this victory seals the 2010-2011 Hokie Grail for Sigma Chi. The Hokie Grail is the award bestowed upon the fraternity with the greatest overall athletic accomplishments throughout the school year, calculated through a point system.

 

Our chapter won 4 out of 6 IFC athletic tournaments this year. In addition to the softball championship, we won water polo earlier this semester and flag football and soccer in the Fall. Congratulations to all of our athletes that made this accomplishment possible.

In the closest race in the history of our chapter’s Derby Days, Kappa Delta edged out Alpha Phi by a mere four points – 1539 to 1535 – to be crowned champions of Derby Days 2011. Alpha Phi led by 81 points going in to the final event, but Kappa Delta’s 1^st place performance and top attendance at Air Bands earned them just enough points to come out on top.

 

Thank you to all of the sororities that came out so strong throughout the entire week to make this such a successful event. Without you this week would not have been possible. A special thanks also goes out to Derby Daddies Hunter Pearson (’11), Nick Soucie (’11), and Chris Kitts (’11) who have worked tirelessly over the past several months to ensure the success of this event. Initial estimates have our 40^th Annual Derby Days as the most successful Derby Days ever, raising over $22,500 for the Children’s Miracle Network.

With Virginia Tech football players Ryan Williams and David Wilson looking on as guest judges, Kappa Delta won the final event of Derby Days – Air Bands – for the third consecutive year with a superb dance performance (see video below). This win brings Kappa Delta within striking distance of Alpha Phi for first place in the overall standings. The final scores will be tallied throughout the night and the results will be announced tomorrow.

Alpha Phi took a commanding lead of Derby Days 2011 on Thursday night at the Brotherhood Auction, winning theme night #3, having the second highest percentage of their sisters attending, coming in third in the brotherhood auction performance, and most importantly putting in winning bids on four sets of coaches. Alpha Phi turned a 31 point deficit to Kappa Delta into a solid 131 point lead. Kappa Delta had the highest percentage of their sisters attending and also came in second for theme night #3. The Gamma Phi Beta coaches won the Brotherhood Auction Performance with their “Friday, Friday, Friday” skit.

 

Tonight’s event is Air Bands and will be held at 5:00pm at TOTS. It is the last event of Derby Days 2011. The results from this event, which Kappa Delta has won the past two years, in addition to overall team donations, will determine which sorority will be crowned champions of the 40^th Annual Derby Days at Virginia Tech.

Thank you to all of the sororities that descended on Adventure World in Christiansburg on Tuesday for what has come to be known as the signature event of Derby Days – the Roller Derby. Congratulations to Sigma Kappa for winning theme night #2 and to Kappa Kappa Gamma for winning the Roller Derby games. Kappa Delta had the highest percentage of their members attending.

This is the second year we have held our "Derby Chase" event, in which our brothers attempt to race from Burruss Hall to Prichard Quad without being tagged by an opposing sorority, thereby earning points for the sorority that they are coaching. Sororities earn points for each brother that they tag, including an extra bounty for tagging the Derby Daddies.

 

Just like last year, no brothers were able to make it across the finish line without being tagged. Reports have it that Colin Pearson (’12) was able to make it to the Peddrew-Yates dorm, getting tagged just before reaching the safe zone. Many other brothers actually managed to get tagged behind the starting line, as they thought it to be a wise strategy to backtrack through the academic side of campus.

Field Games 2011.

After a dominating, double-digit win against Delta Sigma Phi in the semifinals earlier in the day, our Sigma Chi squad faced off against Pi Kappa Alpha in the finals to determine who would be crowned 2011 IFC water polo champions. After falling behind 3-8 at halftime and 8-10 by the end of the 3^rd quarter, our team managed to go on a 6-2 run in the fourth quarter, earning the victory by a score of 14-12.

 

The game-winning score was tallied by J.R. Joyce (’11) with just over a minute remaining. Other goal scorers included Matt Ritt (’11), George Arndt (’11), and Mark Larsen (’11).  Kyle Rixey (’11) played an excellent game in goal, making several crucial saves in the second half to help keep the momentum on our side. He was aided by the excellent defense of Michael Hahl (’11) and Brady Cashen (’11), who helped bring the PIKE offense to a crawl in the second half.

 

This championship is our third IFC championship of the school year. We have now won 3 of the 5 IFC athletic tournaments this year and look forward to winning our fourth when the softball championship is held later this Spring.

The Eta Lambda soccer team took the field Saturday and captured a second straight IFC soccer title. The day began with a 1-0 victory over Theta Chi. Sigma Chi faced Sigma Phi Epsilon in the semifinals. Hunter Wood (13') sent a laser of a shot from thirty yards out to the back of the net in the first half. Sigma Phi Epsilon was able to score a goal late in the second half to tie the game at the end of regulation. After an intense overtime period, the game went to penalty kicks. Senior Scott Rogers (11') and graduate student Lewis Cox finished their shots. Pledge Peter Rhines (14') made a diving save to clinch the game.

Sigma Chi then moved on to face rivals Pi Kappa Alpha in the championship game for the second straight year. As the wind continued to gust, Scott Rogers (11') rocketed a shot past the keeper to put Sigma Chi up 1-0 just a couple minutes into the game. As Pike turned up the pressure, the Sigma Chi defense was able to stand strong to secure the victory. This is the second championship for Sigma Chi this year. The first was a win in the IFC football championship over Pike earlier in the year.

The brotherhood continued to come out strong as brothers, pledges, and sweethearts lined the field to root on the team. Brothers are already looking ahead to the upcoming IFC volleyball tournament, which is the last sport until after winter break.

The Eta Lambda chapter carried the momentum from its strong start to the year into October, raising the most money in the history of the Huntsman Golf Tournament (with the $5,500 donated, the chapter will now have its own engraved brick in the walkway leading up to the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah). Since then, the chapter has added two more impressive notches to its 2010 belt: Winner of Homecoming 2010 and Champion of the 2010 Kappa Delta Fall Festival.

Paired with the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi and the brothers of Farmhouse, Sigma Chi was able to earn the most points of any Greek team and be consequently crowned winners of Homecoming Week 2010. We were able to do this by coming out in strong numbers to donate blood, participate in communitty service events like Greeks Giving back, build a parade float, and attend various school-sponsored comedy performances.

Fresh off the homecoming victory, the Eta Lambda chapter marched on to win Kappa Delta's Fall Festival philanthropy this past Saturday. To win, brothers participated in a cornhole tournament, a corn-eating contest, a pumpkin carving contest, an overall attendence count, and a Moe's night. By winning the Fall Festival, the Eta Lambda chapter has now won both of Kappa Delta's 2010 philanthropies (the other one being the Shamrock Project this past Spring).

Sigma Chi, Eta Lambda held the fourth annual Huntsman Charity Golf Tournament on October 17, 2010 benefitting the Huntsman Cancer Institute.  The Huntsman Cancer Insitute became Sigma Chi’s additional beneficiary in 2005 and since, Sigma Chi chapters across the country have raised money that helps fund the center’s treatment and accommodations.  The Eta Lambda chapter was able to raise $5,500 at this year’s event, $3,000 more than last year’s fundraising tournament.  Undergraduates, Alumni, family, and friends gathered for this year’s tournament to help expand the field to 21 teams.  This is the 2nd year in which the tournament has been in honor of Duane Perdue and Norrine Spencer, two vital members of the Eta Lambda community who have fallen succumb to cancer recently. 

This year’s tournament winners (pictured below) were Michael Doughty (’11), Andrew Lavinder (’11), Chad Williams (’00), and Gray Patterson (’11 – Roanoke College Tau Chapter).  We’d like to take this time to thank all participants, sponsors, and other guests who were made this event so successful this year.  See you next year!

For the second time in three years, the Eta Lambda Chapter (led by Philanthropy coordinator Mark Larsen ('11)) was crowned champion of Tri Delta's Fashion, Flapjacks, and Football Philanthropy. We did so in dominating fashion, winning each competition in the week long event. In the first event on Tuesday (the fashion walk-off at Top Of The Stairs), we took home first place in both the skit category and overall attentence. We also had the best attendence on Thursday, as we had 12 more brothers than any other fraternity come out to eat some flapjacks. To top it all off, David Kruchko ('12) and the rest of the flag football team dominated PIKE for the second time in eight days, bringing home the trophy and title of 4th Annual Fashion, Flapjacks, and Football Philanthropy Champions.

Brothers dressed up as Poke`mon to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital on Tuesday. The event, held at Top of the Stairs, was part of Delta Delta Delta's week long philanthropy entitled, Three Days of Fashion, Flapjacks, and Football. Brothers performed a skit to the theme of, Sigma Chi Helping Tri Delta Cure Em` All. The overall theme for the day was "Childhood Memories." Brothers performed a brief skit, and did their best "Dougie" routine to take home first prize. Philanthropy coordinator Mark Larsen (11') worked with brothers to put together a humorous skit for a great cause. We hope to continue our winning streak this Sunday as the philanthropy concludes with a Flag Football tournament.

This past Sunday afternoon, quarterback Matt Ritt ('11) led the Sigma Chi flag football team to a dominant victory over PIKE in the championship game, coming within a 2 yard catch of having the game called by mercy rule. This adds great momentum for our athletics teams, as we look forward to the other two fall sports (volleyball and soccer), each of which we won last year.
