"The key to our business is people skills.  Sigma Chi helps you learn better people relationships, to get along with others, and also teaches the importance of honesty and integrity."

--J. Willard Marriott, Jr., President of the Marriott Corporation

"You have to be honest, have integrity, be able to cooperate and get along with other people.  Sigma Chi is a great place to learn that and that's why it's a great thing to join this fraternity."

--Jim Palmer, ABC-TV sportscaster and previously 3-time AL Cy Young winner

"The Ritual was very, very meaningful to me.  Initiation week was a very difficult period, needless to say, but I must say in retrospect, it's held its value and its meaning and the historical perspective that it gives you.  I think the Ritual and the fraternity mystics, and just the sense of history that goes back with Sigma Chi are things that help make those bonds so strong."

--Tom Selleck, former star of Magnum, P.I.

    Sigma Chi Horizons Leadership Program

Horizons, a leadership program based out of Snowbird, UT, was created for eager underclassmen who want to engage in self-learning excercises, team-based challenges, and personal reflection.  The program, which is free of charge thanks to generous donations from alumni, selects 146 of the best Sigma Chi undergraduate leaders from across the country.  The program focuses on personal growth, values-based leadership, and character-in-action.  Apply here!

Sigma Chi Balfour Leadership Training Workshop (BLTW)

The Balfour Leadership Training Workshop brings undergraduate chapters together for four days to enhance leadership potential.  The workshop focuses on a chapter's nine key areas: Consuls, Pro Consuls, Quaestors, Magisters, Recruitment Chairmen, Centurians, Emerging Leaders, Chapter Advisors, and Mentors.  It is the largest leadership training session in the Greek-letter world, typically bringing out over 1,300 brothers.  During this workshop, chapter officers gain leadership strategies and tips for implementing effective programming.

     State of the Chapter

The Eta Lambda chapter is currently planning for the Spring 2011 semester.  Over the past year, we are pleased to announce the addition of 42 initiated brothers to our chapter, including several legacies.

As usual, we worked tirelessly in our philanthropic efforts for Sigma Chi's two main charities, the Children's Miracle Network and the Huntsman Cancer Institute.  We were able to raise over $15,000 for the Children's Miracle Network and over $5,000 for the Huntsman Cancer Institute.  We also participated in Virginia Tech's Relay for Life, helping the Hokies host the largest Relay for Life event of any college campus in the country.

On the athletic field, we are on pace to win the IFC Hokie Grail (All-Sports Trophy), with victories in two of the three Fall sports (soccer and football).  Although we dominated this past semester, there is no doubt that the Sigs will be out in full force on the athletic fields this Spring in hopes of winning in basketball, softball, and water polo.

We hosted a very special Fall Initiation in which many Grand Officers were in attendance.  Our initiation was attended by 66th Grand L. Wayne Tucker, several brothers from the Radford and Roanoke College chapters, as well as many of our local alumni.

Among other things, we also raised our chapter GPA and number of brothers on the Deans List.  We moved from 8th to 6th on the IFC chapter GPA list, with an average GPA of 3.0, which is higher than both the all Interfraternity Council and All Men’s average at Virginia Tech.  We also had three brothers attain a 4.0 GPA and 31 brothers who achieved Virginia Tech's Deans List (3.4 GPA or better).

We had a very successful social scene as well.  We were able to experience weekly socials with on-campus sororities, along with seasonal parties and a fall formal event in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
